On Gran Canary many celebrations take place. The majority of them are religiously motivated, but also celebrations are celebrated, which are of old-canarian origin, like for example the celebration in San Nicolás de Tolentino. Canarian celebrations offer an often amused view on the canarian culture to you. Each municipality celebrates „its" celebration, each one even more colourful than the other.
January Already on the 5th of January will take place a high point: the procession of the three holy kings. Particularly in Las Palmas leads the procession along several kilometres by the roads of the city. Also the following days there are celebrations in many municipalities.
February In this month in Ingenio and Moya the "virgin de la Candelaria" celebration takes place. But the absolute celebration is the Carnival, which pulls itself into March and which delights thousands of humans enthusiastically. Dance, music, humoristic meetings, shows, concerts, magnificent linings and omitted processions let you think of Rio de Janeiro.
March The almond trees blossom and in Tejeda and Valsequillo is celebrated the "Fiesta del almendro". Here you can also purchase canarian products.
April The Easter-week, which begins on Gran Canary with the Palm Sunday, is celebrated in all municipalities with partly ostencious processions.
Damp-merrily are the apricot flower celebrations in Fataga and on 29th. The "Fiesta de Ansite" takes place in Ingenio and the near by "Fortaleza Grande", which reminds of the last guanches.
May In this month many ceremonies take place: the San Isidro celebration in Arucas, Artenara, Gáldar and Guía; the "Caballo" celebration in Valsequillo; the Fatima celebration in San Mateo, where the roads are covered with carpets of flowers, coloured salt and sawdust; the "queso de flor" celebration in Guía, where you are invited to one of the specialities of the island - the cheese.
June The corpus Christie celebration in Arucas, Santa Brigida and Las Palmas is accompanied by colourful processions. Into Cruz de la Montañeta a large campfire is ignited in honour of the San Antonio. On the 24th Las Palmas celebrates its establishment day, in addition, in other municipalities one commits the St. Johns celebrations on the same day.
July This month is dedicated to the "Nuestra Señora Del Carmen", the patron saint of the fisherman. A celebration in honour of her take place on the 16th in nearly all fishing villages. The celebration is particularly beautiful in the municipality of Mogán, where from Puerto de Mogán to Arguineguin a boat procession takes place. On the 25th the day of "Santiago", the patron saint of Spain is particularly celebrated in San Bartholomé as well as in Galdar.
August The most traditional and the most multicoloured and occasionally also wildest celebration are the "Bajada de Rama" in Agaete, which is of old-canarian origin. On this celebration the Gods are called for rains for a good harvest.
September The most religious celebration of the yearly is the "Fiesta de la virgin Del Pino". This day is in most municipalities a holiday and hundreds go on pilgrimage to Teror, to meet on the 8th in front of the church.
On the 10th nobody remains dry, when the youth falls in full clothes into the water on the "Fiesta del Charco de San Nicolás".
October On the 6th Las Palmas celebrates the "Fiesta de la Naval", in memory of the victory over the buccaneer Sir Francis Drake. On the following day there is the "Fiesta de la virgin Del Rosario" in Agüimes with processions and above all sporty farmer matches. In Ingenio the celebration "La Baja del macho" is celebrated, when the most magnificent he goat is led through the roads.
November In Arinaga between the 1st and the 15th a celebration in honour of the holy "San Martin de Pores" takes place. In Teror the village elders go through the town with guitars and castanets, in order to collect donations for the church, so that masses for the souls in the "Purgatories del Rancho de Ánimas" can be celebrated.
December Traditionally in many municipalities chrismas cribs are presented and Christmas masses are being held. Besides that Santa Lucia de Tirajana celebrates the "Fiesta de los Labradores".
